William "Bill" Baird Lusk

Hornell

William "Bill" Baird Lusk, of Wood Street here in Hornell, New York, passed away peacefully on Sunday (January 31st, 2016) at St. James Comfort care, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Hornell, New York, May 5th, 1924. William was the son of John and Thelma Baird Lusk. He spent the earlier part of his life during The Great Depression with his grandparents in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, but most of his amazing life was spent in Hornell, New York.

Bill was graduated from Hornell Senior High School and won the State Musical Championship playing his oboe (accompanied by Mrs. Grimm on the piano).

He loved to fish and he enjoyed his camp on Loon Lake where he spent many happy summers for most of his adult life. Bill also liked bowling, even though his wife "Doris" beat him most games. He enjoyed archery, hunting, golfing, pool, listening and dancing to Big Band music and reading a good book. He even learned to use his Nook, which gave him many wonderful hours of reading.

William joined the Army/Air Corps in February 2, 1943, with the title of Medical NCU Sgt. 673. He assisted flight surgeons by caring for the physical wellbeing of the pilots and wounded men, even having to help operate when needed. Bill learned these skills at The School of Aviation Medicine, located in Randolph Field Air Force base in Texas.

Upon his return home from the service, William began his career at St. James Mercy Hospital in 1949 as a Medical Laboratory Junior Technician for the Steuben County Lab. His career progressed to Senior Technician, Bacteriologist, Senior Bacteriologist and finally to Laboratory Supervisor and a Biochemist.

He married Doris A. Bossard on a beautiful day in June (06/11/1949) on The Bossard Homestead, located on The Turnpike.

William was predeceased by his parents, his wife Doris of 61+ years and his brother John Lusk. Bill is survived by his four children, Steven E. Lusk, Gail (Lusk) and Steven Faes, Lucinda (Lusk) and Richard Giglio, Brenda (Lusk) and Peter Koerner. He has five grandchildren. Nicole (Giglio) Wald and husband Steven Wald, Richard Colin Giglio, William-Corey Giglio, William Michael Lusk-Faes, Joseph Duncan Lusk-Faes with the very recent addition of a great-grandson Oliver Finn Wald. Bill is also survived by his cousin Florence Hardesty of Oregon and many nieces and nephews whom he adored.
