William L. Bacon, 89, of 5950 County Rte 29, passed away Friday (February 11, 2011) at his home.



Born in Hornell, May 2, 1921, the son of William H. and Dorothea Clark Bacon, he had resided in the Canisteo area all his life. He was a graduate of Hornell High School. Bill had served his country as a member of the United States Marines Corp during WW-2, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal. He served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations at Iwo Jima, Okanawa, Oroku Peninsula and Sugarloaf Hill. He was employed as an electrician for the former Erie Railroad, later the Erie Lackawanna and Conrail prior to his retirement after more than 50 years of service. Bill had taught electronics at Hornell BOCES for several years. He operated a TV and radio repair service in Canisteo for several years. He was a 66 year member of Hornellsville Lodge #44 F&AM a member of the IBEW and served as a Boy Scout Leader for several years. Bill started playing music professionally at age 11 with the Lloyd Hagadorn Banjo Band, and will be best remembered for his participation in the Log Cabin Boys Band at Lake Demon.



He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Helen Ross Bacon in 2001, his daughter Sandra Murat, his grandson, Alex Richard Murat, and his great grand daughter, Alicia Kay Murat.



He is survived by 2 son, Richard (Linda) Bacon of Bellwood, PA., and William (Nancy) Bacon of Bath, 12 grandchildren, Ronaland Clark, Bert E. Clark, Amy M. McElhinney, Richard L. Bacon II, William M. Bacon, Heather S. Bacon, William B. Bacon, Diana M. McCullen, Elaine Senkiw, Robin L. Murat, Shawn L. Murat and Scott M. Murat, several great and great great grandchildren.

The family will be present to receive friends on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo where funeral services with military honors will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM, Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.
