Wilbur Perry Horton, 96, formerly of Depot St., passed away Saturday (November 14, 2015) at the Hornell Gardens.



He was the son of Delbert and Maude Horton. He was born in the town of Rathbone on January 1, 1919.



He was predeceased in death by his twin brother, Wilson Delbert Horton in 1992. Later by his brother Lester.



At the age of 17 he broadcasted with his twin brother on Station WESG, Elmira for the Cabaco Bread Co. of Corning.



He was married to Delilah A. Thurston January 24, 1941 till her death September 10, 2003. They were married 69 years.



He was manager of the Electrolux Company for several years. He was responsible for the company settling in Hornell, but years later he resigned as manager, but continued to sell cleaners.



In 1972, he decided to establish a rug cleaning business.



Before coming to Hornell, Wilbur served time in the US Navy from 1944-46, during his service he served on board the Destroyer US Taylor during WWII. At that time they were assigned to help the battleship Missouri as Admiral Halsey's escort along with two other destroyers. He later received a letter from President Truman to thank him for his services and his bravery at his call to serve his country.



The day that the Peace Treaty was signed in Tokyo Harbor on the Battleship Missouri he was a guest on the Missouri watching the Peace Treaty signing in Japan. He won four stars during his service.



He was also a member of the Arkport Methodist Church. He had also been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He received several medals while serving including the Victory, American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific, and the Philippine Liberation.



Wilbur was also predeceased by his wife, Delilah T. Horton of Clarksville, NY in 2003. He is survived by his seven children: Douglas (Deborah) Horton, Carolyn J. Horton, Ronald (Sarah) Horton, Deborah LaBarron, and Darlene Straub all of Hornell; and Diana (William) Lomax of Middlesex and Jeffrey Horton of Lockport, grandchildren, Cheri, Michael (Tracey), Lori (Bryan), April, Lisa (Joshua), Ryan, Barrett (Rebecca), Vincent, Joseph, Jonathon, Bryan, and Mary. His great grandchildren, Lexi, MacKenzey, Gianna, David, Makenna, Parker, Andrew, Madison, Charlee, Kaydi, Logan, Clara, Lily, and Madison, several nieces, nephew, and cousins.

The family will be present to receive friends on Wednesday from 11AM-1PM, at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1PM, with the Rev. Pam Carey officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodhull Cemetery, with Military Honors.
