Virginia M. Harter, 83, a resident of the Hornell Gardens, and a former longtime resident of Canisteo, passed away suddenly on Sunday (June 4, 2017) at Hornell Gardens.



She was born in Ellington, NY, on January 23, 1934, the daughter of Thurber R. and Grace L. (Barringer) Thayer, she had resided in the area for many years. She graduated from Lockport Senior High School "Class of 1952", then went on to earn her BA in Psychology from Seattle Pacific College in Seattle Washington, and also earned her RN degree from the former E.G. Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo. Virginia was a dedicated RN, and had worked for the former Bethesda Hospital, and St. James Mercy Hospital. She was also a member of the Free Methodist Church in Hornell, where she had served as Treasurer and a Delegate for many years.



She was predeceased by her parents and her husband Earl F. Harter in 1998, whom she married on October 28, 1961.



She is survived by her daughters Violet Harter of Albion, and Earleen (Randy) Carroll of Bunker Hill, IL, her granddaughter Amanda Carroll also of Bunker Hill, IL, her brother George A. Thayer of Ellicottville, NY and her sister Ruth Marzolf of Florida.



A Private family service was held on Friday (June 9, 2017) at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home in Hornell, with burial at Rural Cemetery in Hornell.
