Virginia Young Smith, passed away after a short illness on September 7, 2009 in the loving arms of her family.



Born March 5, 1919, she was the eldest daughter of Berthold Gabriel and Marie Young. She was a life resident of the Hornell/Canisteo area. Virginia graduated from Hornell High School in 1936. She married Walter D. Smith on March 4, 1938. They moved to Canisteo in 1950 where they made their home and brought up three daughters. Virginia volunteered for the Civil Defense as a plane spotter (Identifying planes) over Canisteo in the early 1950's. She also worked for the A. Nelson Henry Insurance Agency and was an aide at Canisteo Central School. Virginia was a vibrant, talented Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. She was an accomplished pianist, flutist and a noted artist; her medium primarily oil paintings. Some of her work was purchased for and is displayed in the Henderson- Smith State Office Building in Hornell. She was an avid reader and had an ongoing quest for knowledge. Virginia was a past member of the Order of Eastern Star, a Charter member and past Secretary of the local Snowmobile club, a lifetime member of the Canisteo Historical Society and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canisteo. She had an abundance of strength, faith, patience, understanding and love, living each day to its fullest. In March, she celebrated her 90th birthday with friends and family at the Canisteo American Legion.



She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Walter D. Smith, a brother, Robert Young and a sister Marilyn Ingalls.



She is survived by three daughters; Sandra L (John) Casey of Churchville, Valarie M. (Don) Davidsen of Canisteo, and Sylvia C. (John) Angel-Currier of Hartland, Maine; two brothers, William B. (Jean) Young of Canisteo and Richard (Peg) Young of San Antonio, Texas, 14 Grandchildren: Shawn Casey, Colleen (David) Fodge, Heather (Brian) Fovel, Eric (Kristine) Casey, Rita (Joe) Pencille, Lisa Stefaniak, Timothy Casey, Gregory (Cathleen) Casey, Camille (Paul Broderick) Atherton, Kimberly (David) Kramer, Dr. William Atherton, Jeffrey(Kelly) Atherton, Jason(Patty) Angel, Luke(Dawn) Angel and 18 Great Grandchildren who all referred to her as "Grandma Great", several nieces and nephews.



Family and friends will be received at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home , 6 Spruce Street, Canisteo on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo on Saturday, at 11:00 AM, Pastor Daniel Pickering officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.
