Virginia F. "Ginny" Smith, 88, of ChurchStreet Court, passed away Thursday (June 8, 2006) at the Vincent House in Wayland following a long illness.
Born in Hornell, May 3, 1918, the daughter of Johnand Mary Maniak Damrath,she had resided in Hamburgfor several years, and in Hornell the past 20 years. Virginia was a graduate of Hornell HighSchool, Class of 1937 and had beenemployed at the former Harvey & Carey Drug Store. She was a member of Our Lady Of The Valley Parishand a communicant of St. Ann'sChurch. She was also a member of theCatholic Daughters of the Americas , a member of the St. James Hospital Auxiliaryas well as a Foster Grandparents at St.Ann's Church for 15 years.
She was predeceased byher husbands, Donald Hale of Hamburg andGerald Smith of Campbell, her son, Jeffery Hale, her sisters, Helen Stevens,Ruth Lodato, Irene VanSkiver,Mary Ormsby, and her brothers, Eddy, Leo and John Damrathnephews Gerry and Laddy Damrath,and her niece, Judith Ormsby.
She is survived by 2sons, James Hale of Charlotte, NC, and Jack (Cynthia) Hale of Rochester,daughter-in-law, Barbara Hale of FortMill , NC, 4 grandchildren, Joseph (Kathy) Hale of Swrewsbury MA., Gregory (Mary) Hale of Rye, NY, Amy (Scott)Tyson of Charlotte, NC., and Susie (Scott) McCarverof Rock Hill, SC, 8 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews.

It was Virginia'swishes that her body be donated to the Universityof Rochester Medical School. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will becelebrated at St. Ann'sChurch in Hornell on SaturdayJune 24, 2006, at 11:00 AM.
The family is very grateful to friends, family, volunteers,and Southern Tier Hospice that supported Virginiathrough out her illness. The loving dedication of Southern Tier Hospice, thestaff, volunteers, residents, and supporters of Vincent House, where Virginia passed away,hold a special place in the family's heart. Virginia will be remembered as a mother andgrandmother devoted to her family.
