Thomas W. Speed,86, of
18 Russell St,passed away Wednesday (October26, 2005) at his home.
Born in Worcester, MA., March 16, 1919, the sonof William and Isabella Speed, hehad resided in Canisteo for more than 60years. Tom had been employed as anappliance repairman for the former Hollands Hardwareand Canisteo Furniture and Appliance in Canisteo and had taught appliancerepair on the BOCES Campus in Hornell for several years. He received his BS degree from Oswego University. He had served in the US Navy for 8 yearsduring WW-2 and then completed more than 20 years in the Navy Reserves. He wasa member of the First Baptist Churchin Canisteo where he had served on the Board of Directors for many years. He was a life member of the Canisteo AmericanLegion , a member of the Hornell VFW, Member and past master of Morning StarLodge #65 F&AM of Canisteo and a member of the Pearl Harbor SurvivorsAssociation.
He is survived by hiswife, Ruth Spencer Speed whom he marriedJuly 17, 1943, three sons:William R. Speed, Richard S. Speed, and Thomas R. Speed all of Canisteo,Several grand and great grand children, nieces & nephews.
The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Friday, at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteowhere funeral services will be held followingcalling hours at 8 :00 PM, Rev.John Harris officiating. Burialwill be in Bennetts Creek Cemetery, Canisteo.
