Shirley R. Smith, 75, of
7922 State Route 36, passed away Friday (October 3, 2008) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bath. Surrounded by hisfamily.
Born in Hornell, October 7, 1932, the son ofEarl and Pauline Voltz Smith, he had resided in this area all hislife. He was a graduate of Hornell High School, Class of1950, and served his country as a member of the United States Army from1957-1959. He had been employed in dairyfarming in his early life, and later atthe Former GLF in Bath. He then became a truck driver and wasemployed by the former Cleveland Truck Lines and Roadway Express. He attended the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church. He was also amember of the Arkport American Legion Post, the Hornell Moose Lodge, theArkport and Howard Fire Departments and the Teamsters Union Local # 317. He enjoyed working in the Ceramic Shop inArkport which was operated by him and his wife, playing cards, but most of allspending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed square dancing, and was a memberof the former Buds N Blossoms. In recent years, he and his wife enjoyedspending winters in Florida.
He was predeceased byhis parents, and 5 other brothers, Myron, Milton, Gerald, Merlin, and Larry Smith.
On August24, 1957, he married the former Lorraine Maginleyand together they recently celebrated 51 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Arkport, three sons: Terry Smith of Bath, Kyle (Diane) Smith of Orchard Park, NY, Jeffrey (Bridget) Smith of Lancaster, SC., 2 brothers, HarlandSmith of Bath, and Thurlow (Bonnie) Smith of Fremont,4 grandchildren, Brendan Smith, Garrett Smith, Noah Smith and Caleb Morse,several nieces and nephews.
The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4 & 7-9 PM Monday, at the Bender -Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell where funeralservices will be held on Tuesday, at 11:00AM with Rev. Daniel Pickeringofficiating. Burial with militaryhonors will be in Howard Cemetery.
