Shirley Cardner Gilroy

Shirley C. Gilroy, 94, of 420 Seneca Road, passed away Friday (July 20, 2018) at Elderwood Nursing Home in North Hornell.
Born in Canastota on October 7, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Harold Lee and Estella Dietz Cardner. Shirley was married to Liston Gilroy who predeceased her on October 24, 2001 after 55 years of marriage.
She was a graduate of Canastota High School where she was an avid basketball player, cheerleader and member of the Thespian & K.E. Society. She also graduated from Central City Business Institute in Syracuse. She was employed in the family meat market while attending school and began her secretarial career at the Canastota Board OPA during World War II. After the war she was employed as a Secretary at the John Deere Branch in Syracuse. After moving to North Hornell she was employed as the Secretary to the Director of Nurses at the former Bethesda Hospital in North Hornell where she retired after 23 years of service.
She was of the Protestant Faith and was active in Children Programs and teaching Sunday School. Sewing was her hobby and she managed to sew anything from Draperies to Baptismal Gowns. She was a member of the Hornell Area Chapter of the National Secretaries Association and was awarded the honor of Secretary of the Year.
Shirley is survived by her daughters Sharlene (Stephen) Price of Fremont, NH and Colleen (Nicholas) DeMonte of Rochester, NY, five grandchildren Heather (Chris) Ryan of MA, Daniel (Julie) Clow of RI, Deanna (Chris) Ross of MA, Connie (TJ) Circhirillo of Spencerport, NY and Nicole Frick of Penfield, NY, seven great grandchildren, LaReina and Raquel Circhirillo, Christopher and Jackson Ross, Norah Ryan, and Jack & Izabelle Frick, and several great nieces and nephews.
Shirley is predeceased by her sisters Virginia Potter, and Norma Funari, and also a nephew Francis (Sharkey) Funari and nieces Maureen Potter, Norene Harris, and Nancy Stanburg.

The family will be present on Thursday (July 26, 2018) at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home 354 Canisteo Street in Hornell from 9am-10am, with a funeral service following calling hours at 10:00am, with The Rev. Katherine Griffis officiating. Burial will be in Lenox Cemetery in Canastota, New York
