Shirley A. Petersen, 86, formerly of Fairview Ave., passed away Tuesday (August 22, 2017) at MM Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua.
Born in Hornell, NY, July 18, 1931, the daughter of Clayton and Lottie (Wheeler) Averill, she had resided in Hornell most of her life. Shirley was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1949. She volunteered for many years at St. James Hospital and at Hornell Elementary Schools. Shirley was choir director at the Former St. Paul's United Church of Christ and a member of the Hornell First Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband; Frederick "Pete" Petersen, 1 sister; Arletta Fraser, 3 brothers; Clayton, Richard and Keith Averill as well as an infant daughter; Barbara Petersen.
She is survived by 4 daughters; Kathleen (Mark) Oldyn of Minnesota, Karen Dailey of New Mexico, Bonnie (Krystyna Rydzy) Petersen of Massachusetts and Cheryl (Patrick) Allen of Canandaigua, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
