Rosella Smith
Hornell
Rosella (Miller) Smith was born April 23, 1923 in Howard, New York, the youngest child of Victor and Mildred Miller.
She attended grade school in Howard, graduating from Hornell High School. She married Milton H. Smith October 1, 1941 in a double ceremony with "Dee" and Irene Rauber.
Rosella worked alongside her husband on their Butchers' Corners farm, driving tractor and milking cows, when not taking care of home and children. She was Milton's caregiver in his later years, when he was incapacitated by Parkinson's Disease.
As a PTA member for some 30 years, she supported her children's school activities.
She belonged to Big Creek Methodist Church and was active in the church choir.
She also belonged to the Home Bureau and the Eastern Star.
She and Milton were members of Big Creek Grange for many years and later, the Stephens Mills Grange. For many years, she was a regular worker in the Grange Dining Hall at the Bath Fair and during the Dairy Festival. She served as a volunteer with Faith in Action for several years.
Her kitchen was a favorite gathering spot because of the delicious food prepared there and for the warmth of good conversation and conviviality. Some of her baked specialties were bread, maple-glazed doughnuts, all kinds of pies and cookies. She freely distributed her baked goods to friends and neighbors, along with her playful humor, thoughtfulness, and cheerful attitude.
She dearly loved her church community, Buena Vista Wesleyan Church. Her strong faith came from a lifetime of growth and a deepening relationship with God.
For several summers, she enjoyed opening her home to young college students who played for the Hornell Dodgers baseball team.
She supported the Fremont Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Corp. in their fundraising efforts, and enjoyed volunteering at spaghetti suppers.
The family is grateful to the staff at McAuley Manor and Updike's rest home for their care and kindness.
She was predeceased by her Husband Milton, Sister Beatrice (Miller) Karr and brothers DeForest, Ernest, and Kermit Miller, Brothers-in-law Merlin, Shirley, Gerald, and Larry Smith.
