Robert W. Snowden, 86,passed away January 22, 2010 at St. James Hospital. He had been a patient at the Hornell Gardens Nursing Home for the past 4 ½ years, and formerly lived at 54 Reynolds Ave. in Hornell for 60 years. He was born Feb. 9, 1923 the son Annie and William Snowden, who immigrated from Nottingham, England to Hornell in 1915.



Bob graduated from Hornell High School in 1941. He married the former Doris Nichols of Hornell in 1943 and served in the US Army during World War 2 from 1943-1946. He was employed in the office of the Erie, Erie Lakawanna, and Conrail Railroads for 42 years until his retirement in 1983. He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Hornell where he served in many offices over a period of more than 40 years. He was made an Honorary Trustee after having served as a trustee for more than 35 consecutive years, the longest term of any church member. He was a member of the Hornell Fortnightly Club and served one term as city councilman under the former Mayor Harold B. Crandall. He and his family were proud of their English heritage and he and his wife traveled to England three times from 1978 until 1984 visiting relatives and gaining additional family history. In turn, his relatives visited the US on two occasions during that time. Bob was a devoted family man and he and his wife Doris, raised six children on Reynolds Ave., a home that they loved. Bob enjoyed gardening, landscaping and especially rose gardening; which occupied his spare time for several years and attracted many visitors to his home.



He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Gertrude Snowden, Margaret Markel, and Irene Tuttle, a 5 year old daughter, Mary Margaret in 1955, and a daughter, Betty Jane Withey in 2008.



He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Doris Snowden of Arkport, a daughter, Kathleen (Charles) Bill of Arkport, four sons, John (Ursula) Snowden of Las Vegas, William (Diane) Snowden of Fairfax Virginia, Michael (Susan) Snowden of Hornell, and Richard Snowden of Buffalo; 36 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews, brother-in-law, Raymond Nichols of Henrietta, sister-in-law, Arlene (Glenn) Masters of Painted Post, and sister-in-law, Margaret (Marvin) VanDerWall of Fairport.

The family will be present to receive friends on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home 354 Canisteo Street, Hornell. Funeral services will be held at on Tuesday at 2 PM at the Hornell United Methodist Church. Rev. Marian Luce will officiate. Burial will be in Hornell Rural Cemetery.
