Robert N. Sherwood, 87, of 47 1/2 Pennsylvania Avenue, passed away suddenly Saturday (January 17, 2015) at Olean General Hospital.
Born in Floreffe, PA, September 24, 1927, the son of Roy C. and Kathryn (Franzen) Sherwood, he was a lifelong area resident. He was a veteran of the US Merchant Marines and the US Navy during World War II. Early in his career he had owned and operated the Friendship Hotel, and later went on to work for Acme Electric in Cuba for many years, and later retiring from HYSOL in Olean. Bob was a communicant of Our Lady of the Angels Roman Catholic Church in Cuba, and former communicant of the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Friendship. He was a member of the American Legion Post #1168 in Friendship, a past volunteer fireman for Friendship, and enjoyed hunting.
He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Roy Sherwood, and Patricia Reno.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis A. Gray Sherwood, whom he married June 21, 1948, his 4 daughters Sandra (James) Schwab of SC, Deborah (Randall) Crane of Friendship, Kathryn (Silas) Smith of Angelica, Roberta (Joseph) Smith of Blue Ridge Summit, PA, 11 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren.
The family will be present 4-8PM Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 101 West Avenue, Angelica, with a Rosary Service at 8:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Our Lady of the Angels Roman Catholic Church in Cuba, on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 11:00 AM, with Father Dennis Mancuso as celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Friendship, with Military Honors by the Friendship Legion.
