Nancy C. Lewis, 71, of 9 East Washington Street, passed away Saturday (March 22, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.



Born in Hornell, March 13, 1943, the daughter of Chester and Louise Clark Cole, she had resided in Hornell the greater part of her life. She was a graduate of Hornell High School and Simpson College in Iowa. Nancy returned to Hornell in 1969 and was employed as an elementary school teacher in the Hornell City School District until her retirement. She had taught at the Lincoln, Bryant, Columbian and Intermediate Schools in Hornell. She truly loved teaching but was most excited about being a full time mother and grandmother.



Nancy was a member of Our Lady Of The Valley Parish, and a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church, as well as St. Ann's Church. She was known for her sewing, knitting and crocheting.



She was predeceased by her parents, her husband William J. Lewis Jr. in 1993, her sister, Margaret Hamilton-Clark and her brother, Phillip Cole.



She is survived by her sons, Michael (April) Lewis of Missouri, Stephen (Jennifer) Lewis of South Hornell, David (John Foltz) Lewis of Virginia and Thomas Lewis of Hornell, her sisters, Elizabeth (Charles) Hirt of Mass., Christine (August) Cavaletti of Hornell, Ann (Richard) Kloss of Hornell and Susan (Robert) Cawley of Hornell, her brothers, Andris (Barbara) Cole of Maryland and Robert (Linda ) Cole of Canisteo, 5 Grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends on Wednesday from 6 PM until 8 PM at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell. Friends are invited to meet the family at St. Ann's Church in Hornell on Thursday morning at 10 AM when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Hornell.
