Mary ‘Pat’ Thompson
Mary Patricia Thompson, a lifelong Hornell resident, passed away Nov. 29, 2024, at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Mt. Morris.
Pat, as she was known by all, recently celebrated her 90th birthday with her family, insisting on sharing a nip of the Irish with everyone. Anyone who knew Pat also knew she loved family, especially children, and St. Patrick’s Day.
Pat was born Nov. 13, 1934 to Robert and Margaret (Tucker) Haley. A twin sister, Elizabeth, died at birth and it appeared as though Pat would pass as well. Yet her parents took her to the Haley family home on Grand Street, and after days of round-the-clock care and some warming on an open oven door, she began to thrive.
Busy with the care of the brothers and sisters who followed her, Pat was a natural caregiver. She attended Hornell schools and graduated from the St. James School of Nursing, and from there worked at hospitals in Buffalo and Hornell.
Family legend has it that it was at a hospital when she first met Rolland Thompson. Married in 1962, they had nearly 60 years at each others’ sides, until his passing in 2022. Together they raised four children in homes in Birdsall and Hornell.
Pat was always busy with knitting, craft and painting projects, and also cared for countless children of family and friends. All found love when they entered her home, and also plenty to do even on blustery days.
In addition to her parents, Pat was predeceased by brothers Robert, Thomas, Lawrence and Joseph, by a sister, Priscilla Eleachea, a brother-in-law, Leo Clancy, and sister-in-law Sybil Haley.
Pat is survived by her sister, Margaret Clancy of Hornell; brothers Timothy (Sharon) Haley and Eugene ‘Spike’ (Karen) Haley, both of Hornell; her children Susan Thompson of Hornell, Laura (Jon) Dickason of Rush, Thomas (Brigette) Thompson of Rushford Lake and Andrew (Carol) Thompson of Hunt; grandchildren Jack, Josh, Scott, Joseph, Jake, Calvin, Sylvia and Emma; sisters-in-law Sandra, Barb and Brenda and brother-in-law Peter, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and great-grandchildren in the Haley and Chase families.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St., Hornell, where the family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, with a funeral service, led by Deacon Robert McCormick, to immediately follow. Burial will be in Oakland Hill Cemetery, near Nunda, at the family’s convenience.
