Mary M. Shutt, 75, of 7653 Doorley Rd., passed away Thursday (May 12, 2016) at St James Mercy Hospital.



Born in Hornell, February 26, 1941, the daughter of Gilbert and Bertha Hamilton Nichols, she had resided in Hornell all her life. Mary was active in the development of the ARC, now known as the Arc of Steuben and served as its first woman president. She had been employed as a caregiver for the ARC in Hornell and for several years as a cashier at the former Sugar Creek in Hornell. Mary will be remembered as a huge "Elvis" fan, and had a large collection of Elvis memorabilia.



She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Richard F. Shutt in 2002, her step son Dale Shutt, and her two daughters, Terri Shutt in 2009 and Tammy Colburn in 2011.



She is survived by two daughters, Connie Shutt of Hornell and Rebecca McCarthy of Florida, her son, Richard F. Shutt II and his wife Marlaina of Almond, her step son Devin (Connie) Shutt of Ohio, and a grandson Jeffery Shutt who Mary and Richard raised, her brother William "Bill" Nichols and his wife Audra of Maryland as well as 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell on Sunday from 5 until 7PM where Funeral services will follow calling at 7 PM. Rev. Dudley Jenkins will officiate. Burial will be in Hornell Rural Cemetery.
