1937-2024
Mary D. Birdsall, 87, of Avoca NY, peacefully passed away Thursday morning, July 25, 2024 at home surrounded by her loved ones.
Mary was born July 18, 1937 in Hornell, NY to the late Madeline (Dempsey) and Florian R. Widmer. She was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1956. She received her Associates degree in business at the Rochester Business Institute, Rochester, NY, and worked 14 years as a receptionist and records management for physicians at St. James Mercy Hospital before devoting her love to her two children full time at home, and assisting her husband in their personal businesses. Her enjoyment to help others led her back into the workforce as a caretaker for clients within Steuben ARC in 1992 for 20 more years.
Mary enjoyed cooking and especially baking where she was well known for the tastiest breads and pies, card games, bird watching (cardinals and hummingbirds were her favorite), admiring her flowers and plants, which she jokingly remarked she didn’t have a green thumb, and summers at the lake. She loved all animals, and enjoyed her cats and dogs that would cuddle with her every night. Her friends, family, and strangers were always welcome with her giant smile, positivity and sweet demeanor, and she was ready to feed an army on a moments notice.
Her loved ones will miss her dearly as well as the stories of her youth and her children. Her legacy will live on in her surviving spouse of 52 years, William H. Birdsall, her daughter Dr. Michelle (Mark) Kidder of Oak Ridge, TN, and son William M. Birdsall, of Canisteo. Grandchildren, Captain Justin (Alyssa) Kidder, Nathan (Veda) Kidder, Caylin Birdsall, Hailey Birdsall and great granddaughter Evie Michelle Kidder, brother Robert (Jackie) Widmer of Arkport, NY, sister Carol (Jim) Woods of Buffalo, NY, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life for family and friends at a later time. Her wishes were to remind all to enjoy the time with your loved ones. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s name to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Rd, Hornell, NY 14843, please check the website for multiple ways to donate.
