Martin M. Halbert Jr., 73, of 13 Spring Street, passed away Tuesday (December 8, 2009) at home surrounded by his family.



Born in Burns NY the son of Martin and Harriet (France) Halbert, he had resided in the Canisteo area most of his life. Martin graduated from the Woodhull Central School and served his country in both the United States Air Force and the Army National Guard. He owned and operated Marty's Repair Service for many years. Marty was a member of the Morning Star Lodge #65 F&AM as well as the Canisteo American Legion. He enjoyed going for morning coffee at Big Pappa's in Canisteo and was an avid bowler. Marty loved fishing and assisting the Amish.



He was predeceased by his parents as well as two brothers Gerald and Winston Halbert, and his beloved Chihuahua Pilly.



He is survived by his wife Edith Halbert whom he married on Oct. 11, 1958; three daughters, Monica (Robert) Recktenwald of Owatonna MN, Martine (Thomas) Marts of Odenton MD and LeSandra (Andrew) Bertch of Canisteo, One brother; Donald (Donna) Clark of Batavia OH, two sisters; Dawn (Dick) Frasier of Franklinville, NY and Sharon (Robert) Wilhelm of Crofton KY, five grandchildren, Alisha (David ) Foster of TX, Seth Recktenwald of TX, Nathan (Sophia Rigatos) Marts of NJ, Devan Bertch of NY and Denae Bertch of NY, two great grandchildren; Jenna Foster and Christian Recktenwald both of TX.

Friends are invited to join the family at the Bath National Cemetery Interment Shelter for a graveside service on Friday (December 11, 2009) at 11AM.
