Marian W. Oakes, of
58 Bennett Street,died Friday morning (October21, 2005) at St. James Hospitalfollowing a long illness.
Marian was born in Hornell,where she resided her whole life. She was a graduate of Hornell High Schooland was a very active member of the community, participating in Irving Schoolactivities and holding positions of grade mother and den mother with the CubScouts and Weblo Boy Scouts. She was formely an active member of the Park Methodist Church, which includedthe Mary Thelma Circleand other activities, along with Plain Jane's Home Bureau.
Throughout her lifetime,Marian was employed at many different neighborhood stores, including the MarketBasket, Cook's Family market, Day's Grocery, and Gray's Grocery. She alsoserved as an usherette in the old Steuben Theatre. She retired from the EveningTribune, where she worked in the mail room and business office, and she heldthe position of City Historian upon her death.
Marian will be remembered forher caring nature, humorous style, her repeat of witty sayings and songs, andfor constantly sharing the wealth of her lifelong knowledge.
She is survived by herbrother Claude Whitaker of Hornell, her son David D. Oakes, and daugther in lawSharyn M. Oakes of Hornell, granddaughters Kelly M. Gleason of Clarence, RandiL. Oakes of Hornell, Mary C. Franklin of Akron, Ellen O. Kerr of Hornell, andDanielle G. Oakes of Hornell, and great grandchildren Joshua G. Gleason, ConnorD. Gleason, and Jenna Leona Franklin.
She is predeceased by herhusband, Robert F. Oakes, parents Newtonand Isabelle Whitaker, Sisters Grace K. Adams and Mary Alice Caskie and brotherRobert N. Whitaker.

The family will be present toreceive friends Monday (Oct.24, 2005) from 2-4 &7-8:30pmat the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home 354 Canisteo St. Hornell, wherefuneral services will be held at the conclusion of calling at 8:30pm, with Rev.Dudley Jenkins, and Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.
