Margaret R. Acker, 83, formerly of 11 Fifth Street, passed away Sunday (August 15, 2010) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville.



Born in Canisteo, October 24, 1926, the daughter of Ralph E. and Mary VanZile Brown, she was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, Class of 1945.She moved to Wellsville in 1957, returning to Hornell in 1983. She was a former member of the First Congregational Church of Wellsville, she served as chairman of the Christian Education Committee and taught Sunday school for several years. While in Wellsville, she was active in Cub Scouting and Brownie Troops as well as the Wellsville Little League and Small Court Basketball.



She had been employed at the former Loblaw's Grocery in Wellsville and had assisted her husband in the operation of Acker's Quaker State Gas Station in Wellsville from 1972 until 1982. After returning to Hornell, she was a receptionist for Brown & Powers Funeral Homes for several years.



She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Lawrence "Bill" Acker in 1997.



She is survived by her daughter, Patricia ( Thomas) Cline of Wellsville, her sons, Robert (Dawn DeBock) Acker of Hornell, and William (Sally) Acker of Bolivar, her brother and sister, Jerry and Irene Brown of Canisteo, 9 Grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Bender- Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo Street Hornell on Wednesday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM . Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 AM. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.
