Lyndel K. Shorts, 80, of Parrish Rd., passed away unexpectedly Monday (May 1, 2017) while a patient at St. James Mercy Hospital.



Born in Hornell, May 5, 1936, the daughter of Earl and Vera VanFleet Porter, she had resided in Canisteo for most of her life before making her home in Hornell the past few years. Lyndel was a graduate of Canisteo Central School and in her early years, was employed at the former Wilkinson's Ben Franklin Store in Canisteo. She was employed for several years as a payroll clerk at the former Bethesda Community Hospital in North Hornell, and after the hospital closed, she became the Office Manager at the Hornell Gardens until her retirement.



She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Canisteo, a member of the Alter Guild and the Stephens Gray Class of the church and a former member of the church choir.



She was predeceased by her parents, her husband; James Shorts, her sister; Beverly Foote, her brother; Richard Porter Sr., and two nephews; James Porter and Richard Porter Jr.



She is survived by her son; Michael Powers of Hornell, her step-daughters; Dawn (Glenn) Burritt of Canisteo, Sheila (Kurt) Dwight of Hornell , step-grandchildren; TC (Jolynne) Burritt of Hornell, Shawn Burritt of Canisteo, Melissa (Chris) Robinson of Hornell, Justin (Mandi) Dwight of Hornell and Nicole Dwight of Hornell, step-great grandchildren; Jack, Henry, and Eleanor Burritt, Collin Wheaton, Arianna Bourgeois, Raiden Dwight, Derick Harris and Savannah Dwight, Caitlin Robinson, Hannah Bacon, and Jacob Bacon, her sister-in-law; Patricia Porter of Canisteo.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell, on Thursday from 2 PM until 4 PM at which time Funeral services will be held with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.
