Lyle E. Morse, 87, of 66 Greenwood Street, passed away Monday (February 6, 2012) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell.



Born in Canisteo, August 7, 1924, the son of John and Goldie VanZile Morse, he had resided in Canisteo all his life. He had attended Canisteo Central School, leaving in his senior year to enlist in the United States Army. He later received his GED. Lyle landed on Omaha Beach in July 1944, and suffered severe injuries during battle on August 4, 1944. He later received the Purple Heart. He was employed for a period of time for the Vint Liquor Store in Canisteo and Welles Brothers Sign Company, later becoming parts manager for the former Suburban Motors in Hornell, a position he held until his retirement in 1975. He was a life member of the Canisteo American Legion Post, member and past president of the Canisteo Booster Club, and a former member of the Canisteo Zoning Board .



He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Harlan Morse.



He is survived by his wife, Carol Wheeler Morse ,whom he married September 28, 1946, his children; Cheryl (Jerry) Chaffee of Hornell, Thomas (Karen) Morse of Canisteo, Nancy (Daniel) Racalto of North Hornell, Mary (Stephen) Schaumberg of Canisteo, Tim (Mary) Morse of Canisteo, Ann Fronk of Hornell and Bridget Alred of Big Flats, 11 Grandchildren; Sarah Capluzzi, Paul Chaffee, Amanda Temple, Daniel Racalto, Catherine Herrera, Shane Schaumberg, Brianne Schaumberg, Steven Morse, Erica Morse, Jacob Fronk and Danielle Alred, 11 great grandchildren, nieces & nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday from 6-8pm at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo where funeral services and military honors will follow calling hours at 8 PM with Lyle's son-in-law Daniel Racalto officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.
