Obituary

Luan Elizabeth Sutton Ellis

June 8, 1941 - January 12, 2026

Luan Elizabeth Sutton Ellis, a beloved lifelong resident of Alfred Station, New York, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on June 8, 1941, in Olean, New York, to Rev. Harley Sutton and Josephine Madge Wilson Sutton (Van Horn), Luan lived a life deeply rooted in faith, family, service, education, and community.

A devoted member of the Alfred Station Seventh Day Baptist Church, Luan served her congregation with unwavering dedication. Over the years, she held nearly every leadership position, including President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. She managed the Alfred Station Food Pantry for many years, ensuring countless neighbors received nourishment and care.

Her commitment extended far beyond her local church. She served on the SDB World Federation from 1997 to 2008, directed the SDB Board of Christian Education for an impressive 24 years, and was elected President of the SDB General Conference in 1989. In 1996, she was honored as a recipient of the Women's Society of the SDB General Conference Robe of Achievement.

Professionally, Luan was a cherished teacher and role model at Alfred-Almond Central School for nearly 30 years, touching the lives of generations of students with her patience, wisdom, and encouragement.

She was also an active member of the Alfred Community Theatre, bringing joy and creativity to the local stage.

In her later years, she generously provided ride services for the Allegany County Office of the Aging, continuing her lifelong pattern of helping others.

Luan was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Ronald A. Ellis, who passed in August 2025. She is survived by her brother, Lyle Sutton; her three children: Tim Ellis, Terry Ellis (and his wife, Susan Weuste Ellis), and Debi Barber (and her husband, Brian Barber); her seven grandchildren: Tyler, Dominique, Juli, Simon, Sophia, Isaac, and Helen; and her three great-grandchildren: Emerson, Jayce, and one on the way.

Luan's legacy is one of steadfast faith, selfless service, and quiet strength. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her light continues to shine through the lives she touched.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at the Alfred Station Seventh Day Baptist Church on Sunday, February 15th at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alfred Station Seventh Day Baptist Church or the Alzheimer's Association®.
