Louis Flanagan, 85,of
Flanagan Road, died Saturday (March 31, 2007) at his homesurrounded by his family.Louie was born March 2, 1922 to John E. Flanagan and Gertrude (McGrath)Flanagan of Hornell. Louie attended St.Ann's School, graduating from Hornell High Schoolin 1944. He was a regular attendee of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, his fatherhaving participated in the construction of St.Ignatius Church. Louie provided thestraw for the Nativity display for many years, and was also a voting machine inspector for theTown of Hornellsvillefor several years.
Louie was a lifelong Dairy farmer, co-owning the FlanaganBrother's Dairy Farm on
FlanaganRoad. Hewas a member of the Dairylea Cooperative. He started milking cows at the tender age of14; he never actually retired, until he was forced to due to ill health on February 17, 2007.
Louie never married, but accidentally became the patriarchof a very large, very noisy family. Hewas known as "Uncle Louie" to all who knew him, even by those not related tohim.
Uncle Louie was predeceased by his parents, his brothers,Paul(his first partner on the farm), Raymond, Leo, Robert, Francis, and JohnEugene; his sisters, Rita, Alice and Ruth.He was also predeceased by his nephew and partner, Donald P. Flanagan,and his very good friend of many years, Janet Austin.
He is survived by his sister, Ellen Tuttle of Hornell, hispresent partner and great nephew, Donald T. Flanagan, co-worker and greatnephew, Paul F. Flanagan, his nurses, Barbara Nankivell,Frances Debyl, Elizabeth Flanagan, Diane Stone, Tina Mehlenbacher, Peggy Ray and ChariseNankivell, Brian and Patty McCarthy, James Weber andBetty Flanagan. He will be missed by hisgreat great nephew, Brent Flanagan, his many neighborsin the Crosby Creek area, his many friends, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Uncle Louie was a quiet man, but he loved a good story andcould tell some doozies in his later years; his blueeyes would just sparkle and his shoulders would shake with laughter in thetelling of some of the better stunts he had witnessed throughout his life. His priorities were the family and the farm;his legacy will be continued. Rest inPeace, Uncle Louie.

The family will be present to receive friends on Tuesdayfrom 2-4 & 7-9PM at the Bender -Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held StIgnatius Loyola Church on Wednesday at 1:00PM. Burial will be in St Ann's Cemetery, Hornell..
