Loretta J. “Nettie” Smith, 88, formerly of William Street, passed away Thursday (June 24, 2021) at the Wellsville Manor in Wellsville.

Born in Hornell June 1, 1933, the daughter of William French Sr., and Geneva Drew French, she had resided in the Town of Howard, Almond and Hornell for several years. She had attended the First Baptist Church in Hornell, and was employed at the former Card’s Drug Store and later, was employed as a seamstress at Marion Rohr’s. She was a member of the Hornell Lodge #620, Women of the Moose and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Arthur H. Cunningham Post #2250 in Hornell. Loretta enjoyed bowling, crocheting and gardening.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Lawrence E. Smith in 1997, her brother; Ronald Smith, her sisters-in-law, Carolyn Mason, Joan Mason, Peggy French and brothers-in law, Eben Mason, Doug Mason, Francis O’Dell and Jack Lamphier, her aunt; Mildred Zimmerman.

She is survived by her brother; William (Patricia) French of Florida, sister-in-law, Elaine O’Dell Lamphier of Woodhull, several nieces and nephews including Wayne (Rae Ann) Mason of Hornell, Daniel (Edna) Doll of Arkport, and Steve Doll of Arkport, several great nieces and nephews, several cousins including Nadine Layfield of Canisteo.

Friends may call on Friday (July 2, 2021) from 5 until 7 PM at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home 354 Canisteo Street in Hornell where funeral services will follow at 7 PM. Elaine Brown will officiate. Burial will be in the O’Dell Family Cemetery in the Town of Howard.
