Lillian F. Carnes, 96, formerly of Swain passed away Thursday (January 14, 2010) at the Hornell Gardens.
Born in Canaseraga, October 20, 1913, the daughter of Sylvester and Harriet (DeGraff) France, she had resided in Swain most of her life. She was appointed by the United States Postal Service as Postmaster of the Swain Post Office on May 12, 1973 and retired on October 2, 1992. Lillian was an avid gardener and loved flowers.
She was predeceased by her parents as well as her husband Kenneth Carnes to whom to was married for 58 years in 1993, five brothers; Roy, Jesse, Walter, Jay, Harry and Adelbert, three sisters; Ethel, Edith and Myrtle, two sons-in-laws; Gregory Carpenter and Gerald Essler.
She is survived by five daughters; Barbara Spencer of Scottsdale AZ, Sandra (Roger) Kiley of Canaseraga, Joan Carpenter of Swain, Nancy (Maynard) Shewman of Pittsford and Dianne Essler of Nunda, two sisters-in-law, Bernice France of Canaseraga and Donna France of Olean, 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

. The family is being assisted by Adam E. DuBois, Director. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Robertson Funeral Home of Hornell.
Honoring Lillian's wishes there will be no calling hours. A private funeral service will take place at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Canaseraga Cemetery.
