Leon A "Gub" White Sr, 82, of
7471 North Main Street Ext, passed awayThursday (January 8, 2009)at St. James Hospital.
Born in Hornell, September 18, 1926, the son of Fordyce and Flossie Wyant White,he had been a lifelong area resident. In 1945 he left high school to join theUS Army and was discharged in 1949, during his deployment he was in the Los Alamos special weapons unit. Gub was later awardedhis high school diploma in July of 2001 at Arkport Central School. He was employedas a carpenter for Erie Railroad, and retired from in 1988 as a unioncarpenter. From 1983-88 he also helped run the Arkport Inn with his son Bob.Gub was a member of the Arkport American Legion, Hornell Elks, and the HornellMoose. He was an avid golfer, giants fan, and enjoyed woodworking.
He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Elnora White,Cora Burdick, brothers Richard White, and, Robert White.
He is survived by his wife Edna Jones White whom he marriedon August 21, 1945, 2 sons Leon (Debra) White Jr of Hornell, Robert (Rita)White of Hornell, grandchildren Beki (Aaron) Button, Robert White, Carla White,and Allison White, great grandchildren Taylor, Kelsey, Rylee, and Nick Button,brother Russell (Marlene) White, and sister in law Pearl White.
The family will be present 2:00pm-3:30pm Monday, at the Bender - Brown & PowersFuneral Home,
354 Canisteo St,Hornell, where funeral services will be held at 3:30 PM, with the Rev. Steve Jewell officiating. Burial will be in Arkport Cemetery,Arkport.
