Leo J. Cox, 80, of 1459 Church Hill Road, went home to be with the Lord on Friday (August 24, 2012) at Arnot Ogden Hospital, Elmira, New York.
Born in Hornell, July 30, 1932, the son of Leo C. and Verna (Burd) Cox, he was a lifelong area resident. Leo graduated from Hornell High School, and joined the US Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict as a mechanic, working on the B-47's. He retired from the former Morrison-Knudsen of Hornell, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Avoca. He was a gifted musician, playing guitar, bass, and banjo in various bands or groups for over 65 years. His gift of music runs four generations deep. Leo also enjoyed building model airplanes, go-carts, doing woodwork, and making various toys for the children in the family and neighborhood.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Ferris Cox ,and three sisters -Betty Rothra, Carolyn Scholes and Doris Blanchard.
He is survived by his wife Robin (Canfield) Cox whom he married on November 2, 1956, Two daughters -Verna (Mack) Mullen of Canisteo, Sharon (Thomas) O'Connor of Binghamton, and three sons- Steven Cox of Hornell, Paul (Valerie) Cox of Memphis, NY, David (Kathy) Cox of York, PA, his sister Maybelle (Carl) Hess of Hornell, Twelve grandchildren, eight great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 9-11am Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Avoca, where funeral services will be held promptly at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Bill McFeaters officiating. Burial will be at Bath National Cemetery with full military honors.
