LaVerne Strobel, 93, of 709 Pine Knoll Park, passed away peacefully, Sunday (March 7, 2010) at Keuka Comfort Care.
Born in South Dansville, November 14, 1916, the son of Arthur and Pearl Pfaff Strobel, he was a lifelong area resident graduating from Hornell High School. He married Ruth E Dunham Strobel on October 2, 1943, she predeceased him on November 6, 2001. Vern had owned and operated the Riverside Lunch Restaurant on Front Street for many years, and also worked for Hornell Woodworking. He was a member of the Hornell Elks, and enjoyed woodworking and furniture making. Vern loved people, along with baseball especially the "Mets", football especially "Buffalo Bills", and cooking shows.
He was predeceased by his wife Ruth, his son Gary Lee Strobel in 1977, his grandson Thomas P Smith in 1984, 2 brothers Woodruff and Herman Strobel.
He is survived by 2 sons William (Sally) Smith of Orchard Park, Thomas (Carole) Smith of Pultney/Lake Alfred, Florida, grandchildren Cheri (Wayne) Grenier, Gary (Donna) Strobel, Brenda (Chris) Wilde, great grandchildren Michael, Jillian and Corinne Grenier, Casey, and Melody Strobel, and George, Catlin and Ilan Wilde, niece Donna (Duke) Flint, and nephew Ronald Strobel and several other nieces and nephews.
The family will be present 2-6pm Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the Robertson Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell, where Funeral services will be held on Thursday, at 12:00 PM. Burial will be in Rogersville Forrest Lawn Cemetery.
