LaVerne Edward Patton Sr., 76, formerly of Alfred Station, died Wednesday (March 7, 2007) at McAuley Manor, after a long illness.
Born in North HornellFebruary 26, 1931, he was the son of Dale and Florence Thompson Patton, both deceased.
Mr. Patton lived in the Alfred-Almond area all his life. He graduated from Alfred Almond Central School in 1950, and was a member of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in North Hornell, where he was a Board member for many years. He was a former member and Treasurer of the local Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship.
He had been employed by Corning Glass and later owned and operated Patton's Septic Tank and Excavation and Patton's Busy Bee Service Inc., for many years. He will be remembered for his blue eyes and his nickname "Barney" He also was a hard worker, a kind man with a big heart filled with generosity.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Judith House in 1999.
He is survived by his children, Sandra Keppel (Ned Carlson) of Williamsville, Timothy Patton of Arkport, Cynthia Patton-Shelgren of Olean and LaVerne "Skipper" Patton Jr. (Brandy Collins) of Alfred Station. Also surviving are his brothers, Marvin of Florida, David of Arizona, Kenneth (Ruth) of PA.,Stephen (Sharon) of Texas, John (Debbie) of Oklahoma and his sister, Ruth Westbrook of Hornell, his grandchildren, Matthew and Amy House, Christopher and Olivia Shelgren, Nicole and Jessica Patton, also the mother of his children, Suzanne Hoolihan of NC. LaVerne also had numerous nieces and nephews.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimers Disease in his 50's, going into a nursing home in his 60's. He also had Charcote Marie Tooth Disease, a form of Muscular Dystrophy.

The family will be present to receive friends 2-4 & 7-9 PM Friday at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home,
354 Canisteo Street, Hornell. Funeral services will be held at the Glad Tidings Assembly Of God Church on Seneca Road in North Hornell on Saturday at 11:00 AM. With Rev. Bert Tidlund officiating, Burial will be in Almond Woodlawn Cemetery.
