With profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Kirk D. McRae Sr., a beloved partner, father, papa, friend, and retired Fire Chief of Almond, NY, who passed away peacefully on May 13, 2025 at the age of 68.
Born on August 11, 1956 in Angelica, NY, Kirk was a devoted family man who found joy in simple pleasures: time with loved ones, riding around on the gator and watching one of his black and white cowboy shows. He will be remembered for his booming laugh, quick wit and the deep kindness he showed to all.
He dedicated many years of his life to protecting and serving the people of Almond, NY. With unwavering courage, integrity, and compassion, he served as Fire Chief for several years before retiring with honor. He was also a member of the Hornell Moose Lodge and Arkport American Legion.
He is preceded in death by his parents Archie and Lois (Clark) McRae and siblings Edward, Karen, James, Jane, Georgia and Archie Jr. He is survived by his siblings Sandy, Margaret, Gloria, LeEtta, Katie, Michelle, Marty and Jay.
He is also survived by his wife Dawn McRae and their children Terry McRae (Daina), North Carolina; Shawn McRae (Dyllan), Wellsville, NY; Kirk McRae Jr. (Patricia), Akron, NY and Danielle Hulbert (Andrew) Almond, NY.
Others cherishing his memory include his long term companion and best friend Penny Davidson and her children Shane Davidson (Bessie), Almond, NY; Chad Davidson (Sarah), Seven Hills, OH; and Scott Davidson (Megan), Painted Post, NY.
Known best as Papa to his grandchildren, Mason, Finnlie, Angelina, Ethan, Gabriella, Adlen, Lennox, Cheyanne, Amber, Hunter, Dylan, Liam, Hope, Morgan, Mekha, Shane, Alyssa, Tom, Maxwell, Maveric, Louella, Evan, Owen, Domanic, Bentley, Lily, Haven and Hayden.
A memorial to celebrate Kirk’s life will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo Street, Hornell, NY., calling hours 3 - 6 PM followed by a funeral service at 6PM with Rev. Michelle Ormsby-Serra officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Wilmont Cancer Center in Rochester, NY.
Kirk will forever remain in our hearts — a hero, a mentor, and a man of rare character.
