Canisteo - Judith A. Grogan of Canisteo, New York, loving wife, mother and grandmother, died on October 6 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a long illness. She was 80 years old. Born in Montrose, Pennsylvania to Ray and Thelma Abbott, who pre-deceased her, Mrs. Grogan graduated with honors from Canisteo Central School in 1950. In 1954 she earned a B.S. Degree in nursing from Syracuse University. That same year she wed fellow Syracuse alum, Robert Grogan. Married for 59 years, they lived almost all of that time in Canisteo.
Upon graduating from Syracuse, the Grogans moved to the Canisteo area. Mrs. Grogan was a nurse at St. James Mercy Hospital, mainly serving in Pediatric Care. Later she taught at the St. James School of Nursing.
In 1970, Mrs. Grogan became school nurse at Alfred-Almond Central School. Shortly after that she became the health teacher at Alfred-Almond. She was among the first educators in the area to offer high school students the American Red Cross standard first aid course as part of her curriculum.
The uniqueness of the program led the Evening Tribune to feature a full page article on the class in February, 1982. The local Red Cross director praised the program, saying, "Many of the students who completed the initial certification went on to participate in more advanced first aid courses taught by the Red Cross. Mrs. Grogan, herself certified in multi-media first aid, is the one who made the program such a success at Alfred-Almond."
Following her retirement from teaching at Alfred Almond, Mrs. Grogan spent several years as a tax preparer for H&R Block in Hornell.
Besides her husband, Judy is survived by four children: Kathleen Grogan of Canisteo; Betsy Lang and her husband, David, of Georgetown, KY; Michael Grogan, and his wife, Melissa Ingram, of Overland Park, KS; and Steven Grogan, his wife, Liz, and their two sons, Ryan and Patrick Grogan, of Rochester, N.Y. She is also survived by two brothers and their families: Dr. Jay Abbott, and his wife, Sylvia, of Litchfield, Ct., and Peter Abbott and his wife, Laura, of Pulaski, NY, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In retirement, Judy pursued her great loves of bird-watching, reading and visiting family and friends as often as possible. She was an avid card-player, always ready for a game of Pinochle or Cribbage. She also was a lover of classical music, especially Opera, and anything by Roy Orbison.

A memorial service in celebration of her life (at which friends and family will be invited to share memories and stories of Judy) will be held 1:00-3:00 on Friday, October 11, at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home in Canisteo.
