Joyce J. Hovey 94, a resident of County Route 70-A, Town of Howard, passed away Friday (Jan. 9, 2026) at Vincent House in Wayland.
Born in Andover, October 7, 1931, she was the daughter of Rex and Gladys Baker Linza. She was a graduate of Andover Central School and had resided in this area since 1959. She had been employed as a payroll and staffing office worker in Buena Vista for several years. She was a member of Hillside Baptist Church in Hornell and was a regular attendee at Haskinville Wesleyan Church.
Joyce admired all of God's creations, especially birds. Her favorites were Baltimore Orioles and Cardinals. She was truly an adventurous person. She often remarked that the closest she could get to being a bird in this lifetime was when she took lessons and was successful in learning to fly an airplane. She was also proud to be able to play golf until she was 90 years old.
She enjoyed vegetable gardening and especially tending to her flower gardens. She was a member of the Haskinville Garden Club, and her favorite flowers were poinsettias and Amarylis.
She was predeceased by her parents, her first husband, Carl Shutt, her second husband, Donald Hovey and her son-in-law, Robert Evans.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Christine (Phillip) Jones of Arkport and Susan (Carlton) Stanley of Virginia, 2 sons, Robert (Colleen) Shutt of Howard and William (Diana) Shutt of Dansville, 11 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday (Jan. 15, 2026) from 2PM until 4PM at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo Street in Hornell, where funeral services will follow calling hour at 4 PM with her grandson, Rev, Dr. Daniel Jones officiating. Burial will be in Fremont Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
Those wishing to remember Joyce are asked to consider a memorial contribution to the Fremont Cemetery Association.
