Joseph J. Oyer, 73, a resident of Soldier & Sailors VAMC, passed away peacefully, Monday (January 9, 2017) at Geneva General Hospital.



Born in Hornell, December 13, 1943, the son of Lewis W. and Mary (Dugo) Oyer, he was a graduate of Hornell High School. He then joined the US Navy, proudly serving from 1963-67. After serving, Joseph attended Alfred State College, Buffalo University, Corning Community College, and St James Mercy School of Nursing. Joe loved dancing, music, especially Elvis Presley, and volunteering for those in need. Education was also a top priority to him, he was very proud to see his daughters receive their degrees. Corinna went to school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and received a degree in Psychology, and Veronica served in the Americorps, and graduated from Fredonia, with a degree in Speech Pathology.



He was predeceased by his parents.



He is survived by his daughters and grandchildren Corinna Oyer and her daughter Ava Oyer, Veronica (Dana) Knowles, and their children Madison, Makaley and Mallory Knowles. He also survived by his sister Annette Oyer of Rochester, and his former wife Kathy Stepnowski of Corning.

The family will be present 12-1pm Saturday, January 14, 2017, at the Robertson Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, in Hornell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church on Saturday at1:30 PM. Burial will be in Bath National Cemetery.
