Joseph C Herdman Jr, was born October 26, 1925 to Joseph and Florence Epworth Herdman. He died on March 4, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. In November 1946 he married Phyllis Thomas Herdman, his highschool sweetheart. They spent their married life on the family farm until they retired, then they spent winters in Florida and part of the summer on Wolfe Island, Canada. Phyllis predeceased him in 1996.



Joe was a man of many talents and interest. He served in the Navy during World War II, and was a 60 year member of the American Legion Hill-Warner Post 414 in Angelica. In addition to being a farmer, he was a bee inspector for New York State for 7 years, and was an Angelica school district bus driver for 37 years. He owned and was involved in several sawmill and logging businesses. Hobbies included growing garlic and sago plants. He also enjoyed making wine with his son Glenn. He was an active member of the New York Beef Cattlemen's Association for many years. Joe was a farmer raising various types of livestock including beef cattle. Many 4-H students bought his steers for their projects.



He was a life long outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing, and trapping. He passed along those loves to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He supported the National Wild Turkey Federation, the NRA, Angelica Conservation Club, and other like minded organzations. Joe obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1941. In 2009, he was recognized by the Masonic Lodge for 50 years of service and received the honor of Master Mason. Joe was one of the original founders of the Angelica Conservation Club 1946.



He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis, parents and a sister Henrietta Herdman.



He is survived by his daughter Sue (Dana) Sanborn of Bradenton, FLA, 2 sons Glenn (Sherry)Herdman, and Joe III (Elaine) Herdman both of Angelica, his sister Marion Heaney of Angelica, grandchildren Steve Herdman, Scott Herdman, Douglas Herdman, Talia Herdman, Eric Mehmal, Jason Mehmal, and Steve Sanborn, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends throughout the United States and Canada.



The family will be present 6-8pm Monday, and 10am-12noon on Tuesday at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 101 West Ave., Angelica, where Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, at 12:00 noon. A reception luncheon will be held at the Angelica American Legion following the service. Burial will be in Until the Day Dawn Cemetery.
