John Philip Spencer

April 27, 1936 — May 24, 2024

Phil Spencer, 88, of Hornell NY passed peacefully on May 24, 2024. He was born in Red Creek, NY to Leslie and Lula Spencer. He is a graduate of Canaseraga Central School and promptly joined the U.S. Air Force. He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Marion (Pete) Seda, Edith (Noah) Stoltzfus, Priscilla (Wayne) Crosby, Edwin Spencer and Andrew (June) Spencer and first wife, Barb Spencer.

He served from 1955-1958 and was trained as a turbine engine specialist. In 1960, he moved with his young family to Phoenix Arizona and began his long and successful career in the turbine engine industry with Garrett. In 1976, during his career, he also graduated with a Bachelors of Science, Mechanical Engineering degree from Arizona State University. He was the project manager for many unique, sometimes one-of-a-kind, development projects, perhaps the most successful was the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) on the Boeing 777 commercial aircraft. Another one of his favorite projects was an engine development program, partnering with Mack Truck, as well as companies in Germany and Sweden, which resulted in much extended overseas travel over many years.
After 42 years of working for Garrett, Phil “retired” and worked for Hamilton Sundstrand in San Diego, CA as a consultant for an additional 12 ½ years.
Outside of work was filled with many activities helping raise 5 children. Such activities included
sports, traveling, maintenance of rental properties, moving, and having a “fleet” of cars to repair.
All of this came with lessons attached that he instilled in his children.

He lived life fully with Birgit. They enjoyed traveling the world and made numerous cross country road trips to visit family. Together, they built and remodeled houses, managed their rental properties, and owned and operated a Bed & Breakfast.

He recently returned to his roots to settle in Hornell NY after living in Payson, AZ for 20 years.

Phil will be remembered for his love for helping others and for always having a smile on face.

He leaves behind his loving wife Birgit Spencer of Hornell NY. Additionally, he is survived by his children: Panda (Tino) Noriega, James Spencer, Leah Anne (John) Cutright, Paula Toensing, Andrew (Kim) Spencer, six granddaughters and four great grandchildren and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
