John G. June, 86, of
270 Walnut St., passed away Sunday (January 7, 2007) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bath, where he had been apatient since Wednesday.
Born in Hornell, May 16, 1920, the son of Glennand Benedicte Raffard June, he had resided in Hornell all his life. He was a graduate of Hornell High School,class of 1939, and attended Cornell University before joininghis parents in the family ice cream business, June's Creamery, on
Main Street in Hornell. In 1942, he enlisted in the US Marine Corpand was trained as an aircraft engine mechanic.He was assigned as crew chief for a C-46 Curtiss Commando and wasstationed on the islandof Oahu. He participated in the island hoppingcampagne of the Pacific Archiapelago. Heattained the rank of Master Sergeant before returning to Hornell in 1946, whenhe became the third generation family member to participate in the operation ofthe family business. The processing plant was sold in 1970, at which time Johncontinued to wholesale June's Ice Cream until the time of his death.
John enjoyed anything automotive"not just the mechanical endof things, but also the driving. Hisfavorite pastime was to drive the back country roads in Steuben Countyand admire the beautiful scenery. He wasalso a race car fan, and in his younger years, would attend the races in Daytona,Watkins Glen, as well as local stock car races and motorcycle climbs.
John was well known for his practical jokes, ability to playpool, driving 30 miles to get a deal on gasoline, and enjoying breakfast withhis good friends, especially when they paid for it. He was a member of the Hornell Elks Lodge, the American Legion Post and theHornell Moose Lodge.
He is survived by hiswife, of 62 years, Carol ( Campbell)June of Hornell, 2 daughters, Kathryn (Erv) Mutton of Georgia., Patricia(Charles) Libordi of Hornell, 3 sons, Richard (Kathy) June of California., PhilipJune of Arizona, and David (Lisa) June of California, 10 grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren.
Mr. June's wishes were to have no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend aMemorial Service on Wednesday at 2PMat the Veterans Administration Chapel in Bath. Burial will follow in Bath National Cemetery.
