John William Irish

June 7, 1942 — June 2, 2025

John Irish, 82, of Angelica, passed away on June 2, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on June 7, 1942, in Centerville, NY, he was the son of Nelson and Hazel Irish. John honorably served his country in the United States Air Force for four years. This experience shaped his strong sense of duty and discipline—values he carried with him throughout his life.
John retired from the New York State Department of Transportation after 30 years of dedicated service. He was also the proud owner and operator of Southern Tier Arms for nearly two decades—a business that reflected his passion as a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and a true patriot. A skilled gunsmith, John took great pride in his craftsmanship and knowledge, which earned him the respect of customers and fellow enthusiasts alike. In addition to his career and business, John worked the land as a farmer and took great pride in rural life and hard work.
An avid sportsman, John had a deep love for the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing, with fishing remaining his favorite pastime. Above all, he was a devoted family man who found his greatest joy in time spent with loved ones.
He was predeceased by his parents, Nelson and Hazel Irish; his brothers, Bill Irish and Wesley Irish; his sister, Mary Doss; and his brother-in-law, Dave Lavery.
John is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Mary; his six children: Kevin (Bonnie) Irish, Girard Kelly, Corinna (Dean) McKnight, John Jr. Irish, Steven (Elizabeth) Irish, and Linda Edwards; his sisters, Linda Lavery and Wanda (Bryant) Coales; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In accordance with John’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or formal services. The family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice Care of Wellsville or the Angelica Legion Post 414.
