John C. Coates, 71, a resident of Bennett Street, passed away Friday (Oct. 18, 2024) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
He was born in Hornell, September 11, 1953 and had resided most all his life here. John had served in the United States Army from 1972-1979 and was passionate about his service to his country. He was a graduate of Hornell High School and had been employed as a car detailer at the former Elsenheimer Chevrolet and Maple City Dodge.
John enjoyed motorcycles, coin collecting, guitars and all kinds of music. He was a Jump Master with over 200 jumps and active in the annual Polar Bear Swim.
He was predeceased by his Mother Joann E. Baker, his step-father, E. Howard “Hud” McKibben, his brother Michael Coates, and stepson Phillip Stiles Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Debra Clark Coates of Hornell, daughters, Jeana (Andrew) Potter of North Carolina, Jennifer (Noah) Voss of Indiana, and Justine Coates of Hornell, his sons, Chad (Katie) Coates of Ossining, NY. and Joseph (Christine) Coates of Illinois, Sisters, Patricia ( Robert) Carlin of Victor, NY, and Penny (Susan) Coates of Massachusetts, brothers, Donald (Pam) Coates of Newfane, NY, Rick (Donna) Coates of Syracuse, Andrew Coates of Painted Post and James (Jessica) Coates of North Carolina, Grandchildren, Emma, Drew Potter, Brandon, Nathan and Madeline Coates, Riley, Sauder, and Isaiah Voss, great Grandchild Kingsley Sauder.
A Celebration Of Life will be observed on March 1st from 12pm-4pm at the Hornell VFW 256 Canisteo Street in Hornell. Friends wishing to remember John, are asked to consider a charity of their choice.
Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home of Hornell is assisting the family with arrangements.
