It is with great sadness that we, the family of Jo Ann (Hunt) Hughes, announce her passing on Thursday (December 28, 2023). Jo Ann, 75, of Canisteo New York passed in peace, with family by her side, after battling a prolonged illness with unwavering strength and resilience.
Jo Ann was born in Hornell to Walther and Mildred Hunt. After graduation from Hornell High School in 1966 she worked for Travelers Insurance in Rochester. Jo Ann later worked at the Hornell Evening Tribune and then the Hornell-Canisteo Pennysaver.
Jo Ann is predeceased by her parents (Walther and Mildred Hunt). Jo Ann is survived by her husband, John Hughes. This past June they celebrated fifty years of marriage. Jo Ann also leaves, to cherish her memories, her daughter Tarra and son-in-law David Crook along with her three beloved grandchildren- Ian (and fiancé Meghan), Emery and Ellie of Cincinnati, Ohio. Jo Ann is also survived by her five sisters (Carol Barbato of Rochester, Beth (Robert) Murdock of North Carolina, Linda Hunt of Virginia, Susan Cieslak of Hornell and Candy (Thomas) Minigiello of Kendall), her two brothers (James (Candy) Hunt of Mississippi and Thomas (Deborah) Hunt of Arkport), and two sisters-in-law (Lisa Hughes and Theresa Hughes). She is also survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Everyone who knew Jo Ann knew how much she enjoyed gardening. The entire family enjoyed the fruits of her labor as she spent hours in the family garden with her father Walt. Her homemade bread and butter pickles were fought over at every gathering. Jo Ann also enjoyed taking care of her yard and, as a result, her landscaping and flowers were always beautiful. Jo Ann was very artistic and really enjoyed crafting of all kinds. She loved gifting her family and friends her creations- everyone’s favorites were slate paintings and woodworked Christmas décor. She also used her talents as a Girl Scout Troop Leader for many years. Jo Ann was also an excellent cook and enjoyed hosting the annual Christmas Eve dinners for her large family. She was also a member of the Hornell Association and the Canisteo American Legion. Jo Ann was an avid reader and living across the street from the town library was perfect for her as she could make multiple trips each week to borrow the newest releases. Jo Ann was an animal lover. She especially loved her favorite dog Emmy Sue and the family cat. She also really enjoyed her lunch dates over the years with her life-long friends reminiscing and creating new memories.
Jo Ann will be dearly missed. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her. There will be a celebration of life planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be mailedin Jo Ann’s memory to the Wimodaughsian Library in Canisteo.
