James G. "Jim" Stearns Sr., 76, of 6 Seventh St. passed away Wednesday (May 16, 2012) at home after a long battle with leukemia.
Born in Friendship, December 4, 1935, at the family home on W. Water St. in Friendship the son of Glenn and Margaret (Brundage) Stearns; he had resided in Canisteo since 1979. Jim graduated from Friendship Central School and played all sports excelling in basketball and had been on numerous all-star teams. He played baseball on the town team (early 50's) in the Alle-Cat league. Jim worked for the Dept. of Transportation and in 1955 took a military leave of absents and joined the US Marine Corps. He was in the 2nd Marine Air Wing and was attached to VMFT-20 fighter training squadron at Cherry Point, NC. Jim played basketball on the squadron team. After 4 years in the Marines Jim returned to the Dept. of Transportation; moving to Canisteo in 1979 after a promotion to general foreman with the DOT in the Maintenance dept. He retired in 1990 after 36 years. He also worked part-time as a Police Officer for the Village of Friendship from 1962 until 1972. In 1957 Jim married Aletha Shelley, after retirement they lived in Zephyrhills FL during the winters. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing. He was a life member of the Friendship Fire Dept., the AMVETS Post #1 in Cuba and served on the board of directors for the Maple Grove Cemetery in Friendship.
He was predeceased by his parents, one son; James Stearns Jr. in 2011 and one grandson; Kyle Stearns.
In addition to his wife Aletha, Jim is survived by one son; Gilbert (Barbara) Stearns of Warsaw, three daughters; Sandra (Doug Cummins) Markert of Elba AL, Sherie (Bruno) Keller of Black River and Wendi (Matthew) Doorley of Hornell, one daughter-in-law; Julie Stearns of Black Creek, one sister; Loretta Koubek of Zephyrhills FL, one step-sister; Pauline (Wayne) Walker of Coudersport PA, 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Honoring Jim's wishes there will be no calling hours. A private memorial service will be held at the convience of the family. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Friendship.
