James G. Sloane
Angelica
Jim Sloane, 83, of 36 Center Street, surrounded by his loving family, passed away July 4, 2013.
Born in New York City, NY, October 15, 1929, he was the son of Leonard and Catherine Sloane. Jim was a Navy veteran stationed in Memphis, TN, although in the navy he was never on a ship. His main duty was a driver for an Admiral and always joked that he got the best food. Jim lived the first part of his life in his beloved Brooklyn, which he visited often and was known as "Jimmy". He was a doorman at the Sherry-Netherland for 15 years and met several movie stars and had stories on all of them, mostly if they were good tippers or not. William Holden liked him so much he gave him and our mother his suite for their honeymoon. He then moved his family to Angelica in 1969 and began his life here, retiring from Acme Electric then working part-time as a driver for Enterprise and a security guard for Dresser-Rand.
Jim is survived by his wife, Anne (Hayes) of 52 years, three sons, Richard Fontaine of Angelica, Jeff (Sue) Fontaine of Belmont, James Sloane of Allegany and a daughter, Laura (Randy) Sloat of Bolivar. 11 grandchildren, Taylor, Christopher, Jamie Lee, Catherine, Jordan, Jenna, Ryan, Alicia, Desiree, Kasey, and Kelsey.
Jim was a great Dad but even a greater Grandpa, never missing a sporting event, taking them fishing, teaching them how to swim and just spending quality time. We cannot express enough what a wonderful man he was and how everyone loved him whether it was long time friends or the grandkids's friends to a clerk at the store saying "oh, that's your Dad?...I love him." He was a great man and we will miss him so much.
Dad loved deep sea fishing which he took all of his kids and grandkids several times, he also loved being in Brooklyn, it was like he was 20 years younger…one of his favorite places to visit besides our Brooklyn relatives, was the racetrack. He liked it so much he and his son Jimmy bought a racehorse, Champ Lamar. Because of his love of Brooklyn and fishing, his family plans on going to Sheepshead Bay to his favorite fishing boat, The Dorthy B, and leaving some of his ashes. Like the saying goes, you can take the boy out of the city but you can't take the city out of the boy.
We will be celebrating the memory of Jim, Monday, July 8th, at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 101 West Avenue in Angelica, NY from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM, with a gathering at the American Legion on Main Street in Angelica to follow.
The family will have a private military burial at the Bath National Cemetery.
