James A. "Pete" Sanford, 81, of
14 Tenth Street, passed awayunexpectedly Monday (April 6, 2009) at St. James Hospital.
Born in North Hornell,April 25, 1927,the son of Bert and Fannie Doster Sanford, hehad resided in Canisteo all his life. He had attended school in Alfred Almondand Hornell, but left early to join theMerchant Marines, and later the US Army, serving his country from 1944 to 1947.He had been employed as a conductor for the Erie, Erie Lackawanna Railroad, and laterConrail, retiring after 38 years of service. He was a member and past commanderof the Canisteo American Legion Post, and a former member of the Hornell VFW.Following his retirement, he owned a cottage on Lamoka Lake which he enjoyed for several years.He enjoyed gardening, country music, and especially, looking out for hisneighbors, making sure their lawns were mowed, and driveways and walks shoveledin the winter. Pete will be remembered for his great sense of humor, and the greatdevotion he had for all his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters, Connie Foxwell and Edna Randall, his brothers, William, Fred,George and John Sanford, and his grandson, David Richardson.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Butler Sanford whom he married July 12, 1948, his daughter,Joyce (Tom) Richardson of Canisteo, his sons, Robert and Alan of Canisteo, 3sisters, Carol (Larry) Dininney of Indiana, BarbaraCornell of Canisteo, and Delores Turner of Bradford, one brother, Max Sanfordof Adrian, Grandchildren, Brent (Nicole)Richardson of Canisteo, Adam (Jennifer)Sanford of Alabama, Lindsey Sanford and her fianceeTodd Bialecki of Almond, and Lauren Sanford ofHornell. Great Grandchildren, Kennedy& Tyler Richardson and Grace Sanford, several nieces & nephews.
The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4&7-9PM Thursday, April 9, 2009, at the Brown& Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM, Rev. David Kilgore officiating. Military honors will be accorded at thefuneral. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.
