James Paul Remchuk, of 38 East Main Street, passed away Monday (November 23, 2009) at the Hornell Gardens.
Born in Hornell, December 31, 1938, to the late Paul W. Remchuk and Sarah Luella (Jones) Remchuk. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Audrey (Perley) Remchuk. He is also survived by his sister, Bonnie (James) Dunn; niece, Kelley and nephew Robert of Milan, IL., and a brother Robert (Judy) Remchuk; niece Connie and nephews, Robert and Gordon of West Chazy, NY.
He was proud of his sons, Norman (Deborah) Remchuk, with grand children, Ryan, Michael, and Elizabeth of Poquoson, VA., and David (Angel) Remchuk of Hornell.
He was equally proud of his "other" children; Tracy Stewart (Gail Demi) of Auburn, Leslie (Cliff) Toback; with grand children Shanna and Branton of New Windsor, Steven (Maneesha) Stewart; with grand children Samantha and Jake of Northfield, NJ, Deborah (Dan) Cleveland; with two step sons Nathan and Justin of Elbridge, NY
He was predeceased by his daughter, Paula in 1973. She was 13.
He graduated in 1957 from Hornell High School. He worked for Repples Meat Market for 4 ½ years, then Hornell Tank and Pump until he joined the Hornell Police Department in 1960. In 1969, he worked at Sing Sing Prison and then Attica Prison. After being hospitalized from a severe beating at the Attica Prison by inmates, he came back to Hornell and in 1970 rejoined the Hornell Police Department, retiring in 1983 after 23 years of service. He worked as a bartender at the Hornell Moose Club for 2 years and the next 15 years as a courier for Steuben Trust Company. While at Sing Sing Prison, he met fellow guard, Charles Turner from Hicksville, NY, introduced him to hunting in the area and for 42 years "Charlie" has come back to hunt. They became as close as brothers and Charlie was best man at James and Audrey's wedding in 1980. Jim was a member of the Hornell Moose Lodge #210, the American Legion and B.P.O.E. as well as a life member of the Amvets.
He was a loving husband, father, and devoted son who spent most of his life as the main care giver for his parents until his father's death in 2002 and his mother's death in 2008.
The family will be present to receive friends on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell where a Moose Memorial Service will be held Friday evening at 8 PM. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 11:00 AM. With Rev. Donald Maynard officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.
