James E "Stub" Newell, 84, of 13 Main Street, passed away Tuesday (June 1, 2010) at the Hornell Gardens.
Born in Hornell, January 10, 1926, the son of James E and Margaret Donnelly Newell, he was a lifelong area resident. Stub was a member of the Bath Elks Lodge, and a former member of the Arkport Fire Department. Early in his career he co- owned a sawmill with Fred Johnson, of which was still his most talked about accomplishment from the past. He also was a potato farmer with Lee Schultheis, and retired from SJ Groves in Syracuse as an Equipment Transporter in 1988. Stub will be remembered for frequenting local coffee shops, as a jokester, being very social, a lover of animals especially dogs, and draft horses, and an incredible family man.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Jean Lawrence Newell in 1979, his sister Helen Young, and brother Arthur Newell.
He is survived by his daughter Nancy (Jim) "Fritz" Ells of Campbell, a son Thomas (Ruthie) Newell of Hornell, 3 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and his dog companion Samantha Jane.
The family will be present 3-6PM Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell, where Funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM, with the Rev. Steve Jewell officiating. Burial will be in Arkport Cemetery.
