Irene Elizabeth Murphy
Hornell
Irene Elizabeth Murphy passed away on January 11, 2019 at the Hornell Gardens. Irene was born July 12, 1919; she was the only daughter of Maude Besse and Claude Hurd of Hornell, New York. Irene was preceded in death by her six brothers and husband of 75 years, Donald E. Murphy Sr.
Except for a short time as a child when her parents moved the family to Florida, Irene lived her entire life in Hornell.
Irene was an active member of the former Spencer United Methodist Church where she helped organize the annual Christmas bazaar, taught Sunday school, and held various offices in the Methodist women's group. Irene was known especially for her sewing and knitting talents and as a lovely woman who could always be counted on to do any task or help any person. Irene and Don met while she was in High School. In 1945 they bought the home Irene grew up in on East Van Scoter Street where they raised their son Donald Jr., and daughter Karen. Irene and Don enjoyed camping and took their tent, and later towed their camper, to parks around the Finger Lakes and in Canada. Irene loved her large, extended family, and organized the annual Hurd-Besse family reunion, held primarily at Stony Brook, for some 30 years. Irene moved to the Hornell Gardens nursing home in 2013.
Irene is survived by her son, Donald Murphy Jr. and wife, Sharon of Dansville, NY; grandson Jeffery Murphy and wife Carolyn of Pennsylvania; granddaughter Stephanie Murphy of Indiana; four great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and her daughter Karen and husband Lawrence Kovach of South Carolina.
