Helen B. Freeland, 84, of 1 North Street, passed away Tuesday (March 29, 2011) at St. James Mercy Hospital.



Born in Amsterdam, June 15, 1926, the daughter of Lee and Alice Coutant Burhans, she had resided in Canisteo for over 50 years. She had been employed as an account clerk at St. James Mercy Hospital and did volunteer work at the hospital for several years following her retirement. Helen was especially proud of all the awards she received from St. James, honoring her volunteer work. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canisteo where she taught Sunday School and played the piano for many years. Helen enjoyed traveling with her husband, Jerry, especially the train trip they took to California to visit family. She also enjoyed riding on the country roads during the fall, admiring the foliage.



She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Rose Hanrahan and Virginia Burhans, and her brother, Donald Burhans.



She is survived by her husband, Francis Gerald "Jerry" Freeland who she married on November 12, 1960, one sister, Margaret Ladd of California, several nieces & nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo where funeral services will be held on Friday at 4:00 PM, Rev. Jim Patton officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.
