George K Ostrander, 79, died Christmas day at Highland Healthcare Facility in Wellsville after a long and difficult illness.
He was born March 7, 1931 in North Hornell, only child of George and Florence (Wells) Ostrander. His early years were spent in the Niagara Falls area. In 1947 the family moved to Angelica where George graduated from Angelica Central School. He attended Alfred University before proudly serving in the US Navy for 4 years.
On July 17, 1954 he married Marilyn Chaffee of Angelica who survives. They lived in the Rochester area until 1963 when they moved to their lovely farm home in Angelica, where they raised their family and resided until 2009 when ill health forced them to downsize and move to Wellsville.
George enjoyed a varied and interesting career path, retiring from Morrison Knudsen in Hornell in 1993. For the following 12 years they enjoyed winters in the Sebring area of Florida.
He was an avid gardener, his garden often the envy of passers by. He also was a skilled carpenter and woodworker, leaving many construction examples and pieces of handcrafted furniture for the family. Music also enriched his lifestyle. His deep bass singing voice was part of area church choirs and singing groups. He was a member of the Angelica United Methodist Church and Hill Warner American Legion Post in Angelica. The Ostrander's enjoyed traveling all around the 48 states, also Hawaii, Alaska, and the Caribbean.
His fun loving and friendly personality leaves many wonderful memories for his family and a wealth of friends.
His is survived by his wife of 56 years, 4 children Robert (Carol) Ostrander of Lyndonville, Katherine (Robert) Starks of Wellsville, David (Eileen) Ostrander of Angelica, and Joel (Jody) Ostrander of Dalton, 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
The family will be present to receive friends Wednesday (December 29, 2010) at the Angelica United Methodist Church from 12noon-1pm, with a memorial service to follow at 1:00pm with the Rev. Tim Middleton and the Rev. Denis Monro officiating. Burial will be at Until the Day Dawn Cemetery in Angelica.
