Gaylord Earl Rough died of complications resulting fromParkinson's Disease on Wednesday (March 7, 2007) at 2:30AM, at the Palliative Care Center & Hospice of Catawaba Valley,

3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC28658 after a recent illness.



He was born in Cochranton,PA, the son of Homer Glenn andMaude Watson Rough. He served hiscountry as a member of the US Army Medical Department from 1943 to 1946. Heattended DePauw University from 1946-1949, then transferred to the Universityof Pittsburgh where he continued hisbiological studies, receiving the B.S.Degree in 1950 and the M.S. Degree in Zoology in 1952. He was awarded the Ph.D degree inEcology from the Universityof Pittsburgh in 1961.



In September 1952, he began his teaching career asInstructor of Biology at Alfred University. He waspromoted through the ranks to Professor,serving as chairman of the Department of Biology, and co-founder and Directorof the Environmental Studies Program.Upon his retirement in 1987, Alfred University honored himwith the rank of Professor of Biology, Emeritus for his 35 years of service.



He was an active member of the Union University Church in Alfred, havingserved as an elder and trustee.



In August 1949, he married the former ElzadaMay Deeter, who predeceased him May 25, 2006. He was also predeceasedby his daughter, Shirley Ann Csete on May 19, 1990.



Surviving are his daughter, Linda S. (Ronald) Probst of Conover,NC, his son, Allen C. (Marianne)Rough of Bowie, MD, son-in-law, Stephen Csete of Illion, 7 grandchildren, Samuel and Kali Nave, Steven andMichael Csete, Andrea Probst,Rachel Probst, and William Johnson, 2 sisters,Doris(Ralph) Hines of PA, Dorothy (Maury) Bonecutterof Indiana, 3 brothers, John(Berdina) Rough ofClymer, Dale (Pauline) Rough of Ohio, and Floyd (Mary) Rough of CA., numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.



The family will be present to receive friends from 4 PM until 7 PM Friday at the Robertson Funeral Home,

354 Canisteo Street, Hornell, NY.Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:30 PM from the Union University Church in Alfred withRev. Laurie DeMott officiating. Burial will be in Alfred Rural Cemetery.
