Frederick A. "Pete" Petersen, 84, formerly of Fairview Ave., passed away Sunday (October 21, 2012) at The Homestead in Penn Yan.



Born in Hornell, January 15, 1928, the son of Frederick O. and Edna (Loesch) Petersen, he had resided in Hornell all of his life. Fred was a graduate of the Hornell High School class of 1946 and served in the Signal Corp. of the United States Army from 1951 until 1953. He retired as a clerk from the former Hornell Erie Accounting Bureau in 1990 and served as a fireman for the city of Hornell. Fred was a former member of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ and a current member of the Hornell First Baptist Church. He was a 30 year member and past commander of the Hornell American Legion Post 440. Fred was an avid bowler and hunter.



He was predeceased by his parents as well as an infant daughter; Barbara Petersen.



He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley (Averill) Petersen, four daughters; Kathleen (Mark) Oldyn of MN, Karen Dailey of NM, Bonnie Petersen (Krystyna Rydzy) of MA and Cheryl (Patrick) Allen of Canandaigua, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends from 11Am until 1Pm on Friday (Oct. 26, 2012), at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell. Funeral services will follow calling hours at 1Pm with the Rev. Jerry Springston, officiating. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Hornell.
